Jan Sebastian Babel

Abstrakt:

The organ is presented here as a complex organism, created in order to ‘do music’ and subordinate – in a unique manner – to a composer’s authority. Following the example of the revolutionary spirit of Franz Liszt, the prospects for making use of the instrument in music of the future are discussed and the nature of the phenomenon of the organ is reflected upon.
The organ of the future is an instrument entirely connected with the space it occupies. Its pipes, even those fancifully tuned, can move along the composed trajectories. They also are able to give off a smell or emit light. The role of the performer increases together with the significance of interpreting a musical piece. The instrument may itself be regarded as a sculpture or a sound-smell-light installation which the recipient is able to explore even during the performance.
The organ of the future may become a gigantic universe of artistic experiences. Still it is crucial no to lose the meaning of art. The meaning which can be found in the humble works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
