The Institute was established by the Senate of the Ponitifical Academy of Theology in Kraków on October 18th, 1993. The aim of the Institute is to make the Academy practically more open to dialogue - ecumenical, interreligious and with all people of good will, within the range proper for a higher pontifical school, which is postulated by the Magisterium of the Church.
Besides giving scholarly circles from beyond the Roman Catholic Church access to the fruits of the Academy's activity, the Institute also creates conditions for a proper course of studies for persons from other Christian Churches and religious communities or confessing other outlooks while willing to study Catholic theology within the Academy, history of the Church or Christian philosophy.
FORMS OF THE ACTIVITY OF THE INSTITUTE
In order to achieve its aims, the Institute:
- organizes lectures, classes, meetings, sessions;
- educates students of the Academy as regards issues concerning ecumenism and dialogue of the Church with the world;
- provides tutorship for students from other Churches studying at the Academy as far as it is required by their specificity;
- publishes books concerning ecumenism and dialogue (the series: "Ecumenism and Dialogue Library").
The Institute stays in continuous cooperation with the Kraków Section of the Polish Ecumenical Council, the Centre for Dialogue and Prayer in Oświęcim (Auschwitz) and the Institute of Slavic Philology at the Jagellonian University.
In the Kraków Diocese, the Institute is a co-organizer of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity and organizer of the yearly Day of Judaism and Day of Islam.
We cooperate with German and American university centres in organizing international interreligious seminaries for students devoted to problems of Christian-Jewish dialogue.

The Institute also takes care of students from beyond the Roman Catholic Church and directs them to one of the Academy courses.
Besides the documents generally required, the candidate should present an opinion of the superior of his religious community. Professional titles and scholarly degrees are conferred by the Faculty Council in accordance with the decisions of the Academy Statute.
EDITORIAL SERIES: "ECUMENISM AND DIALOGUE LIBRARY"
EDITORIAL BODY:
Fr Jerzy Chmiel, Fr Łukasz Kamykowski (Head), Fr Zdzisław Kijas.
The series is edited by the Interfaculty Institute of Ecumenism and Dialogue of the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Kraków.
In a interdisciplinary way it deals with issues related to the dialogue of the Church with the contemporary world. It comprises both books that are fruit of creative search of the Academy staff and those which document the sessions organized by the Institute. They raise issues important for ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.
Reconciliation, the value and significance of family as seen by the great world religions, problems of mixed marriages - these are some of the wide variety of subjects interesting for the contemporary multicultural society and touched upon by the series.
The variety of the subjects does not boil down only to contemporary problems. The titles like Saints and Reconciliation of the Churches or Saints in Culture and Spirituality of the Former and Contemporary Europe prove that it is also historical issues that are the focus.
Among the titles one can also find monographs of specific theological issues, but addressed to a wider circle of readers (Islam and Christianity, The Whole Israel, Justification of the Sinner).
In the course of the 15 years' existence of the Institute and of the Series, almost thirty books were published.
